Mutare, Zimbabwe – The art of dance has taken Kudakwashe Makaza, better known as Kuda the Choreographer, to remarkable heights, linking him with top artists both within and beyond Zimbabwe.
From Humble Beginnings to Stardom
Kuda’s story begins in the bustling township of Chitungwiza, where he was raised by his grandparents. Despite not being academically inclined, his grandmother always encouraged him to pursue education. However, it was dance that truly captured his heart. “Dancing was my hobby, which then grew to be my life. I earn a living through dancing, and my brand is doing well,” Kuda shares. In his early days, Kuda would perform at weddings and events, often receiving a suit as payment. This practice not only provided him with attire for church but also instilled in him a sense of professionalism.
A pivotal moment came when his childhood friend, Tapfumanei, introduced him to professional choreography. “Tapfumanei taught me choreography just once, and I grasped the concept and have never gone wrong since then,” Kuda recalls.
Breaking into the Big Leagues
Kuda’s big break came when he choreographed the music video for Koffi Olomide’s song "Patati Patata," featuring Roki. This opportunity catapulted him into the limelight, leading to collaborations with some of Zimbabwe’s top musicians, including Jah Prayzah and Nutty O. Over the weekend, Kuda was in Bulawayo for the launch of Miss Teen of the Universe Zimbabwe, where he had the pleasure of teaching guests some of his signature dance moves.A Self-Taught Artiste
Remarkably, Kuda is a self-taught dancer. He initially dabbled in various activities, such as soccer and cricket, but his love for dance grew stronger with each passing day. “I wasn’t academically gifted, but my grandmother always pushed me to go to school. Dancing was my hobby, which then grew to be my life,” he says.Kuda’s journey has taken him across the globe. He has traveled to the UAE, Rwanda, and China, participating in weddings and dance classes. “God has been so good to me. I’ve traveled the world and have been to Dubai just to choreograph a wedding. I thank God that I’ve been able to travel by air more than 20 times,” he states.
The Rumba Night Tour
In Harare, Kuda hosts Rumba Night Dance classes alongside rising personality Tariro Gezi. These classes have become a hit in the capital city, drawing dance enthusiasts from all walks of life. “People might think that Tariro and I started dancing recently, but it actually dates back, and it’s been years of practice. Perseverance and consistency in the industry are quite important,” Kuda explains. The Rumba Night Tour, which is now heading to Mutare, is part of a broader initiative to raise awareness about breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event promises an evening of electrifying performances and community engagement, with advance tickets priced at just $10. He dreams of opening his own dance studios in Harare, Mutare, and Bulawayo. “I have already started mentoring young people, and I feel I must train up-and-coming artistes in my field of interest. Using your feet can enable you to take care of your family as long as you can manage and maintain your brand,” he says.Kuda also plans to introduce regular Rumba classes in Bulawayo, with a special focus on mental health and combating drug and substance abuse. “We’ll also have children’s classes, focusing more on mental health, as we fight drug and substance abuse in the country and build self-esteem in people,” he adds.
